Review:

When NECA announced they had secured the license for FVJ I knew it could lead to nothing but good things.  McFarlane had previously done well respected versions of the figure but, as with all of Reel Toys' product, The former McFarlane greats had something to prove and they have done their best effort so far with this set.

It's packaging is very attractive to those who don't open their stuff.  It's a nice Horizontal Window Box, not too big, not too small, but the real treat lies in opening these bad boys up.  As you can see by the packaged pics, the bases connect and feature a film logo to give that statuesque appearance if you want to have them face off against each other, but you can also separate the bases to showcase them individually.

Jason is the best "figure sized" version of the character to date.  the paint and detail on him is amazing, right down to having a lavender hue on parts of his face to give that "I've been swimming way too long" look to him.  The mask fits perfectly on the figure and is easy to remove.  It actually works with the sculpted straps instead of relying on any kind of peg securing system to keep it on his face.  Speaking of his face, we get to see just what they had planned for the film, even though it didn't make the final cut.  Remove Jason's mask to view his Karloff like looks making him that much more of a classic looking monster.

Jason accessories include the aforementioned removable mask, trademark Machete, and an extra magnetic hand used to grip a magnetic Freddy head if you want to recreate the scene from the film.

Freddy is also the best, and most versatile version of the character produced thus far.  Although he is more pre-posed than Mr. Voorhees, the figure makes up for it by including 3 different heads to interchange.  All 3 are amazingly detailed.  The Standard recreates Freddy's typical, and classic look, the second is the more demonized form of the Springwood Slasher from the film's opening, and in another versatile move, you can actually place the accessory head meant to go with the Jason figure on Freddy.  As you can see in the pics, this head doesn't make the best forward vantage looking choice, but from a profile POV it works nice, especially if you place him higher than another figure, as if he's looking down on them.

The detail on the glove and heads are particularly impressive, and previous concerns about finger blade size are put to rest as they look very impressive as well.

Freddy's accessories include Standard head, Demon Head, Winking Head, and removable hat.

The bases for both are from the cabin scene from the film with beautifully recreated flames to give it that extra little touch of coolness.  Although they won't lock together, the fit together nicely with one bases flames giving a slight overlap to help secure the other.  The logo is just a little bit of icing on the cake, something NECA didn't even have to do, but makes the set that much more special.  I wish it could connect with the actual base somehow, but on the other hand, not doing so gives buyers the freedom to use it elsewhere without it looking odd.

All in all the set is beautiful and well worth the wait.  Just take a look at the promotional pictures below, and the Final Product pictures above, and see how it actually came out looking much better than expected; something that is rarely accomplished in the collectible toy world.

The set retails for $29.99, and is being carried by Suncoast, Media Play, Sam Goody, Spencer Gifts, and other specialty stores.

MovieManiacs.net gives the Reel Toys/NECA Freddy vs. Jason set and well deserved 9 out of 10 stars.
