MAC cancels 'The X-Files

In a press release from Moore Action Collectibles today, we learned that there will be no more X-files figures from them after the first series.  Here's the announcement:

August 2002 – We are extremely disappointed to announce Moore Action Collectibles, Inc. will not be producing the anticipated line of X-Files action figures announced last year. Influenced by the television series cancellation, Moore Action does not believe the X-Files market remains strong enough to support the action figure line.

“Halting development of the X-Files action figures was a difficult decision for us” quotes Moore’s Director of Marketing, Wynne Hunkler. “However, we feel confident this move will allow us the opportunity to pursue other projects beneficial to our collectors,” such as action figure lines from the popular Fox Entertainment series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.

Certainly one more blow, to already wounded X-Philes around the globe.

Game Time for Horror Fans

If you're into gaming, now is a great time for Horror fans.  Now in stores are 2 great games based on some favorites of the genre.

Primal Hunt was released a week ago, and is the expansion pack for the Aliens vs Predator 2 PC game.  Beat down the original?  Now pick this one up for added fun.

Buffy the Vampire slayer was released 2 days ago for Xbox, and is an awesome game that is true to the series.  It's a favorite for fans and is surprising skeptics everywhere.

The Thing was released yesterday for PC and Playstation 2. An Xbox version will be released early next month.  The story picks up where the movie left off and follows 2 teams as they are sent into the US Research station to find out just what happened.  The game plays heavily on the trust and fear issues that made the movie so compelling.

As bonuses for Thing fans, Gamestop/Babbages stores are offering a free Movie Maniacs Thing figure with your purchase of the game, and EB Games goes one better by offering customers a free copy of the DVD, which many agree, is one of the best ever made.  Or you can just stay comfortably inside your own home and click one of the above pics to order the games right now.  Either way, check em out and come to the The Asylum to discuss them in their respective threads.

McFarlane enters 'The Matrix'

Well here's a piece of news we have been waiting to share for a month now and what a way to start off August.

In a Press Release from McFarlane Toys today, the company announces that "McFarlane Toys and Warner Bros. Consumer Products have joined forces to create action figures based on Warner Bros. Pictures' highly anticipated second and third installments of The
Matrix(TM) trilogy, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, slated for release in 2003.

On May 15, 2003, Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures and NPV Entertainment, will release The Matrix Reloaded, the second installment of the Academy Award-winning blockbuster The Matrix. The third chapter, The Matrix Revolutions, will be released later in 2003.

Action figures based on the The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions will debut in conjunction with each film's release. McFarlane Toys is working closely with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to determine which characters will become action figures.

The product line will be geared to the adult collectible market and initial plans call for development of dioramas depicting critical scenes from each of the three movies.

"Powered by unique visual moments and strongly identifiable characters, The Matrix films are perfectly suited for action figures," said McFarlane Toys Founder Todd McFarlane. "We look forward to collaborating with our colleagues at Warner Bros. to create a Matrix action figure line that reflects the trilogy's highly stylized and innovative storytelling."

This week on the Spawn message board, the good staff at McToys has been showing off some of the in progress packaged shots of Series 5.  Just click on any of the above pics for a closer look.

Michael Myers: Better off Dead

The consensus of Bishop and myself here at the page, is that anyone and everyone should stay FAR FAR AWAY from Halloween: Ressurection.

It sells out what is left of the series, and then some!  It's bad enough we had to suffer through it so please, take our word for it, it's awful; don't subject yourself to this!  I realize that a certain amount of impartiality comes with this job, but I have no respect left for people who would care so little about fans or characters, that they would write and produce a movie such as this.

Disagree or want to join in the therapy group?  Just come by The Asylum.

Updates for 7-12

'Halloween: Resurrection' opens today!

The murder and mayhem of Michael Myers is back. Laurie Strode faces Michael Myers for the last time, and Sara Moyer faces him for the first time, in 'Halloween: Resurrection.' You can find the latest film in the 'Halloween' franchise at a theater near you starting today. After you've seen the movie, come discuss it at The Asylum. - Bishop

Lucidique joins 12-inch Tortured Souls lineup

You've probably already heard, but just in case, let it be known that a fourth 12-inch Tortured Souls figure is being produced, Lucidique. Expect her to be harder to find than the others, as she'll only be sold through Diamond Distributors and the shops that purchase from them. - Bishop

Sci-Fi unveils plans for 'Tremors' TV series

The long-thought-defunct idea of a 'Tremors' TV series has been resurrected, thanks to the Sci-Fi Channel. Sci-Fi is producing the series for a planned January 2003 release. If you want to see some of the concepts that the team behind the 'Tremors' franchise came up with for the TV series back when they were initially trying to develop the show before the creation of 'Tremors 2,' go to this site, but beware of potential spoilers for episodes of the future series, if these ideas are used on the new show. Kudos to Cinescape for busting this wide open. - Bishop

The best game you're not playing

...is Eternal Darkness, new for the Nintendo Gamecube.  Much has been discussed about this quiet little game that has flown below the radar for almost a year now, and now that it's here, one has trouble describing how amazing it really is.

The gameplay is smooth and can be summed up as your typical "Survival Horror" setup; fans of Resident Evil should be right at home.  The story shares aspects of RE as well as drawing from a more classic kind of horror films and stories. One of the best things about it is that you don't know the story until you finish the game.  It gives you just enough information to start with and each chapter of the story unfolds as you play as a menagerie of different characters spread throughout time.

Another unique feature that stands out is the "sanity" factor.  Each character has a sanity meter that descends each time a character is attacked or unnerved.  As your sanity meter draws closer to the bottom, the game will begin to play tricks on you. You will experience everything from whispers and screams, to children crying, to limbs falling off, to walking on the ceiling and even the blue screen of death.  It's great!

The battle system is tight, the puzzles intriguing, and the story is classic and unsettling.  There are plenty of good 'jump' opportunities, especially if you play in the dark with the volume up.  I know we don't talk about games a whole lot, but when I find that rare gem in the pile of rocks, I feel the need to get the word out.

Check it out for yourself by picking it up today from your local retailer or by BUYING IT ONLINE. - Russ

Resident Evil Gaiden for GBC out now

Speaking of games, the first Resident Evil game for Game Boy was released late last week.  Previously released in Europe, Resident Evil: Gaiden tells the story of Barry Burton from Resident Evil 1 and 3, as well as Leon Kennedy of Resident Evil 2, who both follow reports of an Umbrella B.O.W. aboard a luxury Cruise ship.

The game is very inventive and features dual methods of play.  The basic game plays like the old-school Metal Gear of the NES days, while the inventive batle system takes a more action/RPG approach.  So far the game is pretty sweet, so if you are a fan, check it out at your local store today or ORDER IT NOW. - Russ

Steven Spielberg says 'Jurassic Park 4' is a definite

At the Saturn Awards this week, Steven Spielberg stopped to talk about whether there will be a JP4. His words? "You're talking to the guy who has got to decide, and at this point I've pretty much decided to do a Jurassic 4," he recently told Starlog Magazine. "Similar to the third Jurassic, I will not direct it. I would hope that I could get Joe Johnston to direct this one, too, but it's up to him. I'll certainly offer it to Joe before I offer it to anyone else. We actually have a wonderful story that I think is the best story since the very first movie. In fact, I wish it were the third story instead of the fourth one. It came late, but it is actually the best story I've heard for a dinosaur movie since the Michael Crichton book. And I'm not going to tell you anything about it. My lips are sealed." Dan's JP3 Page posted up the quote first. - Bishop

Robert Englund discusses status of 'Freddy vs. Jason'

Again at the Saturn Awards, Robert Englund took time out to talk about 'Freddy vs. Jason' with Cinescape. You can read the full quote here. Here's a snippet: “I’m thinking now that this new script , which has been around since February, I’m guessing they’ve really gone for fun,” Englund said. “I think they’ve stuck more of the effects which were written out two years ago back in… Now I think they’re really going to have fun. Not make it silly, not make it Abbot And Costello Meet Freddy, but make it fun. It’s been through four directors. It’s greenlit. I don’t think we’re going to do it this year, but it’s definitely going to happen now.” - Bishop

'Terminator 3' news a-go-go

The cast for T3 is shifting, and now it seems that, despite his earlier claims that he would have a cameo, Michael Biehn will not longer appear in 'Terminator 3.' While talking to his fan club president, he said ""No, I am not in a cameo in T3. I am in no way involved." On the flip side, Arnold Movies says that Mark Famiglietti is now a part of the cast. Famiglietti is best known for his role on the short-lived series "Young Americans." Finally, Stan Winston is discussing his special effects work on T3, including what we can expect to see from his crew in the film. You can read all about his words at the Saturn Awards over at Cinescape. - Bishop

Updates for 5-3

'Beyond Re-Animator' is "soon to begin pre-production"

You've heard the rumors, now here comes the word from the official source. Inside the latest issue of Cinescape Magazine (print edition only), Brian Yunza, the producer of the first two films and director of 'Bride of Re-Animator' announced that the third film, titled 'Beyond Re-Animator,' is "soon to begin pre-production." Considering that pre-production on a movie can take anywhere from a few months to many years, that's pretty vague, but it's still a step in the right direction.

According to Yunza, "The third one takes place so many years that it is a whole new audience out there who have never seen 'Re-Animator,' so you would think that it would just be a matter of redoing the original or at least that you could just do a completely new movie. But there are enough fans of the first that you have to be careful not to change anything critical and stay within the same tone." Given that there's at least three (if not more) different possible plot synopses online, it's hard to say exactly what the film will be about, except that it will again focus on Dr. Herbert West.

Lion's Gate Films purchased the rights to release the third 'Re-Animator' film back in 2000, and still intends to do so once it is completed. - Bishop

'Ghost Ship' set report

The company behind the remake of 'The House on Haunted Hill' and the recent 'Thirteen Ghosts' has another spookfest set for this Halloween, titled 'Ghost Ship.' The next Alien

Well, when we learned of McFarlane's firm grasp on the 'Alien' franchise license, we knew there was unlimited potential for many figures.  It seems McFarlane is already on board with that thought as they presented this, the second in the line of Aliens; the quadropedal dog-born alien from Alien 3. This was confirmed and posted today by McFarlane staff member Brad Gould.    So if you are a fan, get ready, because there are plenty of characters and aliens left to go. - Russ

Updates for 4-15

By the Fans, For the Fans...

That was the creed we developed in the last few years and that's the way it's been since the beginning.  I, as a fan, started it all, and fans along the way have helped and still help me.  This update is in appreciation to them and everyone who has ever just stopped by to see the page.  We want everyone to know, that we appreciate other fans, love to hear from them and have their input.  Here are a few things you may not know.

Hill 2001, is a fan who started a collection site for us.  Fans can send him pictures of their collections to be put up for display with other fans collections.  Got a room full of gear your extra proud of?  How about just the figures you like set up in a diorama?  Whatever the case, he'll post it.  We encourage you to check it out by clicking the banner below and if you feel so inclined, send Hill some pics.  In the same field, we encourage you to send us pictures of yourself, normal, in costume, whatever.  Just check the link to the Staff page below and send em in!

Did we mention we have a loyal legion of readers that congregate to discuss pretty much everything under the sun at our Message Board, which is now affectionately referred to as the asylum.  Come by, see what other fans have to say and join in the discussion.  You never know who may show up.  Just Click the banner below to visit.

Lastly, we want all readers to know that we welcome your questions, comments, and Ideas.  Is there something you want to see?  Just let us know.  Got some good pics of some figures you think would work on the page?  Send em in.  We may just use em.  We can't afford to buy em all, and we haven't got every company to send us samples yet so until then, it's up to you!  Feel free to E-mail any of us.  Just Check out the STAFF PAGE for addresses etc.

We hope you enjoy our coverage and we look forward to bringing you the best in the future.  Thanks for reading.  -Russ

18-inch T-800 Terminator scrapped

Kiss this face goodbye. McFarlane Toys has announced today that only one 18-inch figure will be released in Movie Maniacs 5: Edward Scissorhands. The 18-inch T-800 is toast. Not word yet on precisely why.

Some time back, we were told by the folks at McFarlane Toys that if Arnold's likeness rights could not be attained, an 18-inch Endoskeleton would be released in place of the T-800. As of now, we have no word on what happened to that idea. - Bishop

You can find out by checking out the acclaimed thriller 'Frailty.' - Bishop

Updates for 4-4

Building a better Terminator

Over at the Spawn board yesterday McFarlane's own Brad Gould gave us a glimpse of the updated sculpt for the T-800 Endoskeleton figure. The first pic is the updated sculpt and the following one is the Toy Fair Publicity photo so you can compare.

As some hardcore fans noticed at Toy Fair, while a spectacular figure, it had some errors and it seems that many of them have been corrected.  The changes, we learn, come from McFarlane staff working with someone who actually worked on the T-800 models for T2.  Can't get much better than that.  Now if they can just get that gun right I will be a happy man.  Thanks to MMcollector for the heads up.  -Russ
